The Photonics Engineering Doctorate Centre was established in 2001 by Heriot-Watt University and the Universities of Strathclyde and St. Andrews. The Engineering Doctorate (Eng.D) Scheme was instigated by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research council (EPSRC) in 1992 (EPSRC Eng.D webpage).
We are now accepting applications from suitably qualified candidates for Sept. 2009 start.
The Eng.D is a 4-year postgraduate degree, with an emphasis on research in a business context, delivering the senior research managers of the future. It achieves this through a combination of taught coursework (25%) and industrial project work (75%). The Photonics Eng.D coursework consists of specialist photonic and optoelectronic topics, together with business courses taken from the internationally renowned Edinburgh Business School MBA. The selection of modules is tailored to the requirements of individual students and projects.
| The Centre deals with all aspects of Photonics, including telecommunications, high power laser materials processing and optical sensing, and is supported by a wide range of companies. Each year, 10 new-start fully-funded Eng.D studentships will be available to suitably qualified candidates. Each project has an industrial sponsor who will be closely involved; indeed the student will normally carry out the majority of their project work at the company.
