The timetable for the coursework is shown below, for students starting in September each year:

Modern Optics (1.5 modules)
Technical Communication (1 module)
Optoelectronics in Industry (0.5 module)
Experimental Laboratory (2 modules)
Optical Instrumentation and Sensors (0.5 module - optional)
Late December - Mid January Study period
Mid - Late January
(at the University of St Andrews)
Exams
Late January - Early February
(at St Andrews / Heriot-Watt)
Innovation & Teamwork (0.5 module - option)
Mid February – End March Literature review
Mid February Start research work with sponsor company & complete remainder of coursework throughout the 4-year programme

The remainder of the modules can be completed either by distance learning (including the business and management modules) or as shorter periods of on-campus teaching throughout the four years of study.

It is also possible to complete all the coursework by a mixture of distance-learning and short courses; this option is of particular interest to those applicants who are already company employees.
